Here's another picture that's fairly close up and you can see how the pie shaped pieces of plywood make up the shower floor framing. This bathroom remodeling project includes a bathtub to shower conversion, so this is all new construction - nothing was used from the previous construction done here.

These pie shaped plywood pieces allow for the use of thin spacers or shims to tilt the plywood pieces, helping water move towards the drain. Shims are commonly called door shims - wedge shaped pieces of wood allowing for variable amount of raising.
